My Poetry Slam With A Coconut Vendor In Kumasi

Your money Dey inside pocket You put it inside wallet My money it spread for market I put it under my bellet(belt)

On October 19, 2018, I argued with a coconut vendor over giving me crumbled money as change, comparing the cedi note I gave him to the notes he was giving me as change. He said, “Wo die no ye pocket money. Me die no ye market money. Wo die no she wallet mu. By me die no nhye wallet mu.” To wit, my money had been kept in a wallet while his was in his pocket. I liked his rhyming anyhoo. So I asked him to repeat what he said in English because that sounded pretty much like a poem. I suggested we do something like a rap battle. See how the convo went:

Him:
Your money Dey inside pocket
You put it inside wallet
My money it spread for market
I put it under my bellet(belt)

Me:
Massa, market no be toilet
If you no get wallet
Come I go dash you rubber bucket
Or I go give you a free jacket Wey e carry pocket

Him
Oh me I for put am inside my locket
Hustler no get neat money like woman blanket
I’m not banker I Dey sell coconut
If you check my flow dash me your wallet

Me
My nigger, Your flow be wackest
Me my bars be illest
If you Dey uptown police go catch you arrest
You go smell pepper till casket
Tomorrow I for come here after sunset.

After the battle, I told him he won, then we took this nice shot.

Compose just a few lines of poetry in the comment section, let’s see if we can slam. Lol.
